Indulge in these iconic Canadian Nanaimo bars made with layered flavors of chocolate, coconut, and crunchy walnuts.

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for topping)
  • 4 oz dark chocolate (for topping)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over low heat. Mix in sugar and egg until combined.
  2. Stir in graham cracker crumbs, shredded coconut, and chopped walnuts until fully integrated.
  3. Press the mixture evenly into a greased 9×9 inch pan.
  4. Beat together powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and 1/2 cup of unsalted butter until smooth. Spread evenly over the first layer.
  5. Melt dark chocolate and 2 tablespoons of butter together in a saucepan, then spread over the second layer.
  6. Chill the pan in the fridge for at least an hour to set.
  7. Cut into squares or rectangles before serving.

Notes

For nut-sensitive versions, substitute walnuts with sunflower seeds. Use warm water on your knife for easy slicing.
