Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup chocolate frosting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a large sheet pan.
  2. Combine the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda in a large bowl.
  3. Melt the butter, water, and cocoa powder in a saucepan; bring to a boil.
  4. Pour the chocolate mixture over the dry ingredients and mix well.
  5. Stir in the vanilla extract, eggs, and buttermilk until smooth.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes.
  7. Cool completely before frosting with chocolate frosting if desired.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of cinnamon or a splash of brewed coffee to the batter. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days.
